Upstream

Backwards tide

The moon makes you beautiful but I will not stare

Caught by your glamour for long enough

Skin prickles thinking of your resistance

To being swept off rocks

The day I sought clarity,

Away from you

I made vows before ours

I should have believed before

I broke my skin against your walls,

Too many times

Climbed up from my grave,

Grabbing at ledges to escape

We were always going to want

We ascended together. Whatever people say

Whatever you tell yourself in the silent hours

We were the home each of us needed

For a time,

Before our routes diverged.
